What are TMJ and TMD?
TMJ is an acronym for the TemporoMandibular Joints or simply your jaw joints. All normal healthy people have a pair, one on each side of their head. Health care professionals, and therefore the general public, have used “TMJ” to refer to a broad range of disorders affecting not only the TM joints but also associated structures of the head and neck. The proper generalized terms for these types of conditions are Craniofacial Pain (CFP) and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). There are over 200 different diagnoses associated with CFP-TMD, and different treatments are applied to each. The correct diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
What Causes TMJ?
People develop TMJ symptoms when there is an imbalance in the bones, muscles, and joints of the head and jaw. TMJ can occur as a result of inadequate growth of the jaws, mal-alignment of the teeth, multiple or complex dental procedures or restorations, intubation for surgery, injury, or any combination of these.

WHAT IS TMJ?
TMJ is a serious condition affecting the relationship between the teeth, muscles, and jaw joints. Unlike other dental conditions, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) is not a tooth-by-tooth problem but a systemic one.
Unfortunately, many who suffer from TMJ cannot find effective treatment. Patients have reported going from dentist to dentist, also often consulting physicians, only to find that no one has been able to help.
It’s not in your head. TMJ/TMD is a very real and painful disorder! We understand what you are going through and can offer effective solutions. The correct diagnosis is the KEY to successful treatment.
Understanding the Temporomandibular Joint
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is one of the most intricate joints in the body, consisting of a combination of bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue. Its unique design allows for smooth and coordinated movement of the jaw, enabling essential functions such as chewing, speaking, and facial expressions. However, when the jaws are too far back, it can result in various uncomfortable symptoms and limitations in jaw movement.
Our TMD Therapy Options
Dr. Deal offers a range of personalized TMD therapy options to help alleviate pain, restore function, and improve the overall health of your temporomandibular joint. Our therapy options may include:
Custom TMD Appliances
Custom-fitted appliances are designed to prevent teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), which can contribute to TMJ-related pain and discomfort. By providing a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, appliances help alleviate strain on the TMJ and promote relaxation of the jaw muscles.
Orthodontic Treatment
Misalignment of the teeth or jaw do contribute to TMJ dysfunction. Dr. Stephen Deal may recommend orthodontic treatment to correct bite issues and improve the alignment of the teeth and jaw, relieving pressure on the TMJ and reducing symptoms of TMD and restoring function.
Collaboration of Care
Stress and anxiety can exacerbate TMJ-related symptoms by causing muscle tension and jaw clenching. Dr. Deal regularly utilizes other health care practitioners, such as physical therapists and chiropractors, to assist in a comprehensive plan to reduce the effects of poor posture, bruxism, poor sleep, and muscle dysfunction.
